Community Program Instructor

Title: Community Program Instructor

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt (40 hours per week)
Reports to: Education Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Program Instructor supports the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (EASM) Education Department by engaging with community partners, developing world-class aerospace educational content, coordinating staff, and facilitating museum programs. This role is crucial for delivering high-impact, revenue-generating educational experiences that align with the museum’s mission. The Community Program Instructor will support the Education Department of the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum (EASM) primarily in the following capacities:

(1) community engagement with education partners, families, students, and other potential customers
(2) develop world-class aerospace content for educational programs in collaboration with the Director
(3) assist with training and coordination of seasonal education staff
(4) instruction and facilitation of museum educational programs

Community Engagement

  • Regularly communicate with educational partners (teachers, administrators, youth group leaders, etc.) to foster strong relationships and generate program revenue.
  • Greet and orient arriving education groups.
  • Travel throughout Oregon to deliver remote programs and attend events.
  • Develop promotional content for museum marketing channels (website, social media, fliers) to increase awareness and participation in educational offerings.

Program Development & Coordination

  • Develop, review, and maintain educational programming for camps, field trips, and remote curricula with the Education Director.
  • Create and update instructional materials including slide decks and course outlines.
  • Ensure all programs meet world-class standards and align with partner/customer needs.
  • Assist in training and development of education staff (instructors and assistants).
  • Meet weekly with the Director to report progress and measure department objectives.
  • Utilize audience feedback and data collection to assess and improve program effectiveness and impact
  • Coordinate program logistics, including scheduling tours, managing registration processes, ensuring material availability, classroom readiness and set up/tear down of activities and mobile exhibits.
  • Maintain accurate records of program attendance, demographics, and inventory of supplies.

Instruction & Facilitation

Teach and facilitate a variety of educational experiences, including:

  • Educator-Led Tours (Aviation History, Race to Space, Speed & Stealth, etc.).
  • Remote programs (Museum in a Box).
  • STEAM Camps (Day, Spring, and Summer).
  • Special events, workshops, and community outreach booths.
  • Maintain a safe, fun, and clean learning environment while applying effective classroom and behavior management techniques.
  • Support the Education Director in the evaluation of all programs to ensure they are delivered in an engaging, interactive, and educational manner.

  • Assist with the creation of educational materials, lesson plans, study guides, and interpretive content for both on-site exhibits and off-site/virtual programs.
  • Coordinate the logistics for all programs, including scheduling, material preparation, and set-up/tear-down of activities and mobile exhibits.
  • Support the Education Director in the evaluation of all programs to ensure they are delivered in an engaging, interactive, and educational manner.
  • Assist with budget preparation and monitoring for educational and outreach initiatives.
  • Adhere to all EASM policies, maintain punctual and predictable attendance, and pursue agreed-upon departmental goals.
  • This is an on-site position. Employees are expected to work at the museum or designated off-site locations.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

  • This is an in-person, non-exempt position, not to exceed 40 hours per week but is eligible for overtime.
  • Schedules may be flexible, as this role may include nights and weekend engagements. Employees are expected to work at the museum or a specific location when mutually agreed upon by the manager in advance (e.g. Field Trip, Museum in a Box, Day Camp, special projects, etc.).
  • Respectfully takes direction and performs various duties as assigned by the Education Director.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year accredited university
  • 5+ Professional Experience in any field, level, or capacity (references encouraged)
  • 2+ Experience working in educational settings, especially with K-12 school-aged children
  • 1+ year experience in business development (sales, marketing, customer acquisition)
  • 1+ year experience in classroom management (any age and classroom size)
  • Experience in creative work a plus: graphic design, creative writing, social media

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Knowledge of and ability to deliver educational content to intergenerational audiences in multiple formats (lecture, writing, hands-on training, on-site training, or a combination), especially Science, Technology, Education, Mathematics (STEM), Arts (STEAM), and Common Core science benchmarks. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with executives, management staff, employees, guests, visiting museum professionals, and others with solid problem-solving, project management, and planning experience. 
  • Demonstrated abilities in crafting and communicating an overarching strategic vision for a diverse and interconnected series of programs that will capture and engage EASM’s audience and donors.  
  • Ability to identify funding opportunities and/or business partnerships leading to successful program delivery.  
  • Ability to create, manage, and work within an annual departmental or project/program budget. 
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks concurrently with competing deadlines in a demanding environment. 
  • Excellent creative and visionary abilities to add value to current or future educational programs or curriculum. 
  • Excellent project management experience, including time management, coordination, and organizational skills. 
  • Strong analytical thought process, including problem solving and decision-making skills and abilities. 
  • High level ability to continually evaluate and recommend changes to existing educational efforts to achieve maximum opportunity potential.   
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid computer-proficiency skills and abilities, including membership or related programs, applications, and databases as well as Microsoft Office (to include but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
  • Familiarity and appreciation for aviation and space exploration and related areas. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule including overnights, evenings, weekends and holidays.

SALARY 

As a non-profit, we offer competitive medical, dental and vision coverage as well as paid time off, paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan. This is a Full-Time, non-exempt position. Annual salary rate is $45-$55K, DOE.

Education Instructor (On-Call)

Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt On-Call (max. 29 hours per week)
Reports to: Education Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Education Instructor will support the Education Department of the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in the following areas (in order of priority):

  1. Instruction and facilitation of the Museum’s educational programs at the request of the Director
  2. Working with the Director, other Instructors and Assistants to create a collaborative environment
  3. Supporting the development of educational programs (upon request).

This position is an on-call, temporary role, and scheduling is contingent upon program needs, including but not limited to student enrollment and operational considerations.

While the Museum will make every effort to provide advance notice of scheduled work, the Museum reserves the right to cancel or reschedule work due  to low enrollment, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances. Participation in the on-call instructor pool does not guarantee a minimum number of hours or compensation. Similarly, instructors may decline specific assignments without penalty.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instruction & Facilitation: teach the following core educational experiences of EASM:
    • Field Trips (Educator-Led tours, greeting self-guided groups)
    • Remote Programs (e.g. Museum in a Box)
    • Museum Camps (Day, Spring, Summer, Weekend, etc.)
    • Special projects and events (tables, booths, workshops, etc.)
  • Leading by Example
    • Support other Instructors and Assistants during Spring and Summer Camp seasons in particular
    • Substitute for other Instructors and Assistants whenever possible (Field Trips, Remotes, etc.)
  • Program Development (upon request)
    • Develop and upgrade educational programming in alignment with the Education Director’s vision
    • Assist in the design of our programs for a K-12 educational community through research and development

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year accredited university
  • 5+ professional experience in any field, level, or capacity (references encouraged)
  • 2+ experience working in educational settings, especially with K-12 school-aged children
  • 1+ year experience in classroom management (any age and classroom size)

NICE QUALIFICATIONS TO HAVE

  • Degrees or coursework in education, instructional design, classroom management
  • 5+ experience working in education, especially with K-12 school-aged children
  • Certifications in teaching / instruction from an accredited institution or organization
  • Experience with students of diverse learning abilities, needs, and styles
  • Consistent availability on weeknights and weekends

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to engage students with a variety of learning styles.
  • Ability to continually evaluate and modify existing curriculum to achieve maximum engagement with students.
  • Ability to create a fun environment for students and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, in writing and orally across various media, that adhere to confidentiality and protocol.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Good classroom management experience, including time management, coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work alone and without supervision much of the time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly performs tasks with hands and fingers for grasping and holding objects.
  • Regularly performs office-related tasks at a desk or workstation while sitting, such as: keyboarding, phones, handwriting, filing, etc.
