Apollo 8 Art Gallery Contest

Nov 14, 2018 - Dec 7, 2018

Submit artwork for our upcoming Apollo Gallery by Dec. 7

To celebrate the inspiration Earthrise gave to the world, honor the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8 by submitting artwork for our upcoming Apollo Gallery

Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 2018, and was the full dress rehearsal before landing on the Moon. The three astronauts aboard entered lunar orbit on Christmas Eve. Loss of signal occurred at 68 hours, 58 minutes, 45 seconds when Apollo 8 passed behind the moon. At that moment, NASA's three astronauts became the first humans to see the moon's far side. They held a live broadcast, showing pictures of the Earth and Moon that changed the world’s perspective of itself. James Lovell, the Command Module Pilot, stated, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring, and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth."

The Earthrise image inspired environmental movements, peace activists, artists, and countless others in ways that continue to shape our world. In celebration of this mission and the beginning of Evergreen Museum’s Year of Apollo, we are putting together an art gallery to showcase works of art from people who were also inspired by the missions to the Moon.
